Long coat GSD are very rare, yet this rescue group has dozens. This is a huge red flag for me.

I don't believe they're legit. Long coat GSD are rare, less than 10% of all GSD. Yet this site has numerous. It's a red flag for me.

Caring, honest and professional

I enjoyed my experience fostering to finally adopting one of their dogs. They were always accessible and helpful, especially when the dog had swallowed her toy. West side handled everything. They have hundreds of pups and devoted to caring for them takes time, money and PATIENCE! They have it. My dog was previously adopted But was returned because the family didnt disclose they had a cat. They returned her. West side took her back thank God. I fostered her but could tell they must have but her with a rope toy (probably to protect the cat), because she cowered. All the dog needed was love. Patience and training! Im glad I eventually adopted the dog.

OVERZELOUS MANAGEMENT AND COURAGEOUS VOLUMTEERS

The have loads of great dogs that need adoption. They have way too many dogs (120+) in an underventilated facility that reeks of urine. Five minutes in those fumes will make you sick. The volunteers are in tears at the end of their days and give everything they have. Manager Csilla Merrill is unstable and you do not want to upset her or she will unleash venom. The whole place is under a huge lawsuit for mismanagement of donations.

WSGSR is an amazing place

I have 3 dogs I have adopted through WSGSR, and I also did some limited volunteer work with the group while I lived in Los Angeles. I have to say they are a wonderful group that help many dogs, and I am very fortunate to have the dogs I have from them. One of my dogs was rescued off the streets of Los Angeles, his mother and sister died of distemper but he has shown no sign of distemper in the last six years. He was saved and was sleeping in my arms just today. I have seen them ferry dogs to and from vets, raise money for wounded and abandoned dogs, and organize volunteers to walk and help foster the dogs. They are a dedicated group of people that have helped countless dogs.

Horrible

Drove in from Mississippi and realized that right up front they were not Military friendly at all ! Treated my wife and as low life’s. I hope and pray they go under. We did however find an awesome shepherd from Scottsdale

Amazed & Grateful for Extraordinary Work

I was pleasantly surprised by Westside’s friendly and caring attitude. Not too mention, the awesome task of maintaining a clean business & healthy dogs. It is truly amazing to witness devoted animal lovers. They help choose the right dog, tips to adjust rescue dogs, house training :). We love our dog!

Heartbreaking Experience

I commented on April 27, below. We had Zachary Thomas, as we named him for 2 weeks. He came to us very ill, with kidney disease. Our entire family is devastated, and I will never forget him. I am angry, and sad. Some of the employees, and their practices, are deplorable. Robin, the founder, was named as the person who "hand picked" Zachie for us. He was transported to Washington, after many emails from a volunteer. The transport service, let him out once, during the 24 hour trip?? Sadly, he had urinated on himself, and I was upset about that. I reported it to the volunteer, who was going to look into it. But, more importantly, is that this guy was very ill. Very ill. He never wanted to eat, and you could count every rib on him. The vet said he should have weighed 20 lbs more. 20 lbs!! This place was so unethical...and hostile. Please share this information with anyone who is looking for a dog from them. Make sure they do a thorough health screening.

Heartbreaking

We wanted to rescue a dog from them. We were unable to travel to LA, so we were told they could match a suitable dog for us. He was transported via van, by a questionable driver. He arrived very thin and I was instructed to give him medication for kennel cough. The medication made him vomit, and he wasn't eating very well. I stopped giving him the medication and took him to the vet in 3 days. He did not have kennel cough and we were going to give him time to adjust to the transition. They found out I had not given him the medication and a guy named Steve started harassing me. He sent a very potent antibiotic and said if I didn't make sure to give it to him he would die. He claims the dog has pneumonia. So, I took the dog to the vet today... he is very sick... and was very sick when we got him. It's not kennel cough or pneumonia. He has a gastro disorder. I was told before he got here that he weighed 95 lbs, but he weighs 76! We are trying to save this sweet boy and have spent almost $1000. In less than 2 weeks. I have been so stressed out over this. This Steve person has been sending me rude, harassing texts at all hours.

Horrible Service

Just got denied an application for a dog because I have a young child and another big dog. Said with my husband being In the military and him being gone that It would be too hard to exercise both dogs myself and having two big dogs won’t work out and I should get a small dog. Also mentioned our back yard was too small. Even though I walk my dog daily, I take him to the park and we go hiking. As If that’s not a good way to keep your dogs active. From pictures on their website, they have plenty of pictures of the dogs with young children and the dogs with other large dogs together. Basically made me feel we were Incapable of owning and LOVING two dogs at the same time. Good luck finding someone with no kids or other dogs in the household.

Bad experience

Had a bad experience with this organization in 2006. Drove one hour to this location to adopt a puppy. After paying $350 for the puppy, they decided not to give me the puppy because I did not have a doggy door. They never mentioned anything to me previously about a doggy door. They said they would give me a refund, but no one there knew how to issue a credit card refund, so I got to spend an uncomfortable 30 mins waiting for them to figure it out. They actually asked me if I would agree to just donate the $350 to WGSR, Seriously? Then they tried to talk me into taking an older dog as opposed to the puppy. I'm surprised they are still in business. The fact that there is a major lawsuit against this organization does not surprise me at all.

The women in charge are catty

I adopted a great dog from them. A true rockstar. The lower level people are absolutely awesome. The woman that conducted my interview and the volunteers were all great! But one of the head honchos shot me a death stare on adoption day and rudely asked if my old unit's moto shirt was a military shirt. When I told her it was, she had a really passive-agressive response of "Oh. That's nice". Then they gave my buddy the -nth degree for trying to adopt one as his service dog. 98% great people, really trying to do right by the dogs, but avoid dealing with the women that run it. They have a Queen/Empress attitude about them

Betty soon gone after 11 months

I adopted a GSD from Westside German Shepard Rescue. Told she was 2, but was 6. I had her checked out by two vets. She had spinal trauma and arthritis, and was still fertile. She is a beautiful dog, my beloved travel mate. However under all of that fur was an evil surprise. Cancer. After 11 months of loving care and travel throughout North America in our RV, while in Lake Placid, NY it was obvious something was very wrong. Lymphoma was the diagnosis after taking samples from her neck region. 3-6 weeks I was given. Its my bet she had that all along. I am not saying the agency knew, but that is the risk you run. Now she is 10 weeks after her diagnosis and with raw food and prednisone she seems pain free though the end is near. I will not adopt another dog as I am too heart broken. Thanks for letting me share.

On Our Third Rescue from Westside

We have adopted three dogs from Robin and Westside in the past 18 years and have nothing but positive experiences every time. They are a group of dedicated, wonderful human beings. When we had behavior issues with our current dog, they referred us to a wonderful trainer who worked with Dieter for no cost. That was over 9 years ago, and he remains a beloved part of our family. I appreciate the honesty of the staff, who will only place dogs in the proper situation, because returning a rescue is traumatic on everyone. I would trust them with anything regarding their dogs and the work they do. I donate money to them every year.

So rude and would not give me the time of day

I was looking for a rescue and I found one of their dogs and thought she would be perfect for me. When I asked to know more about her they said that she wasn't the right dog for me and told me that I couldn't adopt her. They gave me no actual reason other than a "no." They were very rude and awful to work with. I feel sorry for the dogs in their care because they could be going to good homes, but the organization doesn't seem to want their dogs to go to new homes. I understand screening people because GSD's are an interesting breed and can be a handful, but for those of us who love them, it isn't hard to take care of them. These people are rude and have no business "rescuing" dogs if they're only going to adopt them to select people.

Just a comment....

WOW oh WOW...yeah, women, empty nesters or women that have NO CHILDREN............AND THEY ARE CONTROL FREAKS...especially the adoption counselors.... I understand they are trying to do the best for the dogs....GSDs are my favorite.....but I think that they are all control freaks. I was going to foster, I submitted for a "particular" foster, they did not even acknowledge this, just immediately suggested another dog. Maybe my time is a bit off.....I will them them another chance, but i sense something about their behavior. I walked a dog the other day (one of their dogs), she had a terrible injury....I asked at least 5 volunteers what had happened to dog as dog was a beautiful dog....no one seemed to know ( I bet they all knew but it was hush hush). Ill give another chance and see....when its time for me to adopt not foster.....if I cannot get the dog that "I" choose, I will try other rescues, and all the shelters......hit or miss or simply do the terrible terrible thing of purchasing a dog from a breeder.....which I would feel bad doing as so many need homes. Okay ladies...who work there, you fool NO ONE....there is a *** guy that works there also.
