Why does United Way exist?

I work with several nonprofits in Dallas Metro area. While United Way Metro Dallas has ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS tied up in an endowment fund, they have slashed non-profit organizations during this granting cycle by 30%, 75% and some well executing programs NOTHING. All without warning ... where is the community partnership? UWMD staff gave NO heads up for these organizations who survived COVID, were the ones on the FRONTLNE serving people, to prepare for this massive budget hit. To the companies who blackmail their employees to donate to UW - shame on you. Money could go so much further in today's environment if funds were given directly. Long gone are the days when people needed information on what nonprofits were good, now we have Guidestar.org. To the Board of United Way Metro Dallas - who is looking at the books? What is the % of funds raised and funds actually distributed each year? You force the nonprofits to report on so many metrics, why isn't your board holding YOU accountable?

Their mission statement is all about helping the community thrive but they do nothing of the sort.

I called and asked if the local farmer's market (put on by a volunteer committee in the community) could put up a sign on their lawn for one day a week to help let folks know the market was happening that day...and was told no. I was told no because they are only allowing those who partner with them to put signs out. The Farmer's Market is put on FOR the community by the community and helps local farmers and artisans make a living. But I guess that doesn't qualify helping the community thrive. Rude and petty. They are not for the community just the $$$

Customer service is very Rude

I phoned in to ask if they were open on Thursday after I had just driven up there and no one was there, the online information stated the hours, and it only said not open on Saturday and Sunday. I phoned in and reached a very nasty female. I am so tired of these rude customer service representatives. This looks bad and will stop my support for this company in the future and will make me pass it on.

Not Thriving

From the United Way website: "United Way THRIVE, a collaborative launched and led by United Way of Greater Houston, leverages more than 20 nonprofit partners and partnerships with employers, community colleges, financial institutions and city and state agencies, to provide families with the best and most comprehensive resources, wraparound support and the services they need to reach real and lasting financial independence. United Way THRIVE helps families build stronger financial futures by acquiring skills and education, obtaining better jobs, developing good financial habits and building savings." This has not been my experience. I went to my local United Way last year because I was struggling at $12 and hour to keep a roof over my head. I was earning too much for most assistance, but not enough to meet emergencies (at that salary there's always an emergency) or save, or meet my student loan obligations. I was told by the financial counselor that I needed to earn more money (really?) and later by the employment coach that $12 an hour was a "great, really good" salary, and that I should respond to my lack of reliable transportation by renting a car at $400 a month. They both continued by offering one unworkable solution after another, using poor math (they added and dropped zeroes) in 'helping' me with my budget. There's lots more evidence that they weren't even listening to me most of the time and when they were they demonstrated no real reason that they even deserved jobs. I called and complained. I followed up with several emails. The program is still, for me, nothing it claims to be. I've decided to take what energy I have and just continue to try to do things on my own. They were useless in terms of offering a real path to substantive improvement. If I do end up on the street it would be better than living with their doe eyed, clueless stares and pointless non-advice. The experience was an almost complete waste of my time and other limited resources. I say almost because I at least learned something. Someday, when I do get a good job, you can be sure I will never donate a cent to them. They wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

Disappointed with the United Way

My husband works for a company that supports the United Way - it is a strong recommendation that a portion of their bonus support the community and this company has partnered with United Way. Due to the fact we do not like the United Way for many reasons, we chose to check the box to allow United Way to send our donation/contribution directly to a charity of our choice. SIX months later and numerous phone calls to find out why the Hoovers Hause has NOT received our donation/contribution - we have now heard that our donation/contribution will be divided by the United Way and paid in quarterly installments (the following year) AND after they take a fee! So the Hoovers Hause have NOT received money donated to them by us in 2018 and supposedly they will begin receiving quarterly payments through-out 2019 (it's April and they have not seen one yet). Had we not followed up, the Hoovers Haus would have never seen the money and it's a possibility they never will. Nice job United Way - convincing LARGE organizations to work with you - promising you will forward the donations, holding the money and then taking an additional fee and POSSIBLY donating some to the charity that the employee dictated their money to be sent to. FRAUD at its best.

Rude and unprofessional to a Veteran

I'm a proud military Veteran who would serve their county again and again. I found myself in an unbelievable situation and reached out to the VA for help. I was given the United Way number and received the most remarkable response when I was speaking with the customer service rep when I was asking what type of services they render. She seemed angry so I asked her why was she angry and I quote she told me "You are coming at me." I was shocked because I was only asking her questions about what serves their office provides. So beware when you call the United Way at (212) 251-****. The irony is I used to donate a portion of my salary to the United Way and when I am in need I received shameful service from this agency. Needless to say, I never received help from the United Way.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bad PR

We are encouraged to give @ work if not you are frowned upon , this seems like a steam room operation , I have never heard of help without strings attached . Management wants all to give to make them look good , half of our administrators have no idea whom the work staff is ,while they get weekends & all holidays off. They need to walk in our shoes & see what its like when they drive cars that cost more then my salary . Its the same every year cheap door prizes or bad giveaways to make us donate . One year they had our social security number on the form , I throw my form away , @ times they say they wan it back so they can record who does not give

An expensive pity party

I have faced widespread discrimination in all years as an adult, and United Way's response has always been head patting and referrals to more head patters. If you're looking for an angel on your shoulder, you'll get a hulling, lurking, giant of a corporate barbie doll with a nice car for "checking in on you" and being "worried and concerned." It's a separatist, segregationist democratic putt-putt golf game of jobs for people that support the people that work for the people that caused you problems in the first place. Their 211 system is basically a phone operator with a "resource" directory of tax scams with waiting lists of leashes to attach from facilities to clients. United Way has national ties to armies of pump wearing, mascara clad court house minions that fought their way through college debt and scorn you until you agree to get your head being patting down appropriately. And once you have worked with more United Way head patters and they have been paid more, you still lose everything you own and everyone who lived with you. If United Way purported itself to be like a tunnel with a light at the end of it, I would advise you to just keep your own light, and don't bother going the United Way burnout route.

Michella and Tylasia abandoned by United Way

On Saturday October 21,2017 my wife and I were entering Denny's Restaurant in Edgewood MD at about 7:00 pm. We noticed a young African American lady sitting on the corner in front of the restaurant. As we were leaving after we had finished our meal, we noticed the lady and her one year old daughter were sitting there still. My wife approached her and asked if she was waiting for someone. She stated that her boyfriend had abandoned her three days prior. Her boyfriend had taken her wallet with her money and her ID. She told my wife that her (Michella) and her daughter (Tylasia) had not eaten that day. My wife gave her money and took her into the restaurant and bought her some dinner. Afterwards, not wanting to just leave her I tried to call United Way. United Way told me to go to the nearest police station and they in turn would hel[p. So, I did just that. Unfortunately the officer showed me a United Way brochure which said to call United Way. So I called from the police station. Not even would the person I contacted would not listen but wanted to argue when I was trying to explain this lady's positio. If you don't believe me ,listen to the audio log. All that my wife and I could do was to give her some more money and pay for a room for the night at Red Roof in Edgewood,MD. Thanks United Way but no thanks. What a joke and I hope this true story makes it to other ears. I know for certain that I will pass it along every chance I get.

Danbury Ct.

I called Kim Morgan CEO for help, she responded. I needed immediate help. My biggest problem and issue was I was behind on my payments for the car I use to make a living. I told them in our meeting it had to be paid by credit card right away. I also gave them an address to send a check if had be. They told me in the meeting they would call with their credit card right away. Several days later I woke up to my car gone. It was reprocessed and when I called my car payment company they said they never received a payment. Now I have a pay off fee, and a storage fee five times the original payment. They were negligent in how they handle this I went back to Kim Morgan and BEGGED for her help. She was stoned faced, apologized for not processing it correctly, and not hearing in the meeting how urgent it was to pay it right away. I went to United Way for help and ended up loosing my car, and my way to work. I am a 1099 and a car is crucial. They, Kim Morgan and Casey Levine made me feel like a pathetic human being. I am a domestic violence survivor and dealing with them has made me go back 100 steps. I told them over and over I would give back when I got back on my feet. In the beginning they were caring and nice, then it turned to stone face, without a care of the situation they contributed. I am besides myself.

Short Review on January 03, 2017

United Way in Atlanta SUCKS. They refer agencies that DO NOT HELP. With very high call volumes, these agencies will send you to the voicemail with the box full 24/7. I call everyday, all day for months trying to get assistance with rent with no help. Idk how and why they are still known as a organization that helps people.

United Way-No Charity, No Class, Lies up the **

United Way Metro - in this major area (Midwest) are falsely advertising a department that will assist in the costs associated with families that may be experiencing hardship. Get this, if you have the loss of a loved one and need aid with burial/ funeral arrangements, the people at this agency claim they have a department that will help you. Once you attempt to reach people in this particular "department" they seem to not exist. Loved ones and I were faced with this and I had to get an outside organization to make someone respond to us. Once, we finally got a response, after some six or seven attempts, the supervisor of the director of this office left the impression, in writing, there had been some "breakdown" in communication and this was not a service they provided. Unbelievable, agony, total waste of time. We still have no resolution. This was an unspeakable tragedy we were dealing with. I will never encourage anyone to support, rely on this mega foundation or trust their credibilty behind this.
