To warn everyone about Suburban Propane.

Suburban Propane charges the highest rates in the area. In addition to high rates, they add a late fee to every bill. I had overpaid a bill and had a credit towards my next bill and when the next bill arrived they had applied the credit and, once again, charged me a late fee! I looked back through my bills over the years and every one had a late fee charged, theyre thieves! I switched to Red Hot Propane and their rates were over a dollar a gallon cheaper, around $1.40 per gallon cheaper. If you want to keep getting ripped off, stay with Suburban.

Price Gouging

Suburban Propane is charging almost double what other companies are charging. Their customer service reps are rude and not helpful. I was told they own the tank so they can charge what they want and my only option is to have the tank removed at my expense and they will remove the existing propane for $1.00 a gallon. Ridiculous

Poor customer service

Original review Jan 27, 2023
Im supposed to be on automatic delivery & live in a lake house that isnt well insulated & needs more frequent deliveries. Last year( my first winter here) they pulled this off. This year I called to remind them at the start of heating season. It ran really low & I reminded them again. Tried twice, but no dice. At least the first time this happened the woman was pleasant & they sent fuel the next day. Called again and was told it will take 7-10 days and there is no record of my prior calls requesting more frequent deliveries in my file. That is way too long! By then my plumbing will freeze as the weather forecasting serious cold. Plus Im in my 60s and will not do well with no heat in New England. I was told that I need to call then when the tank is at 35%. Last time I did that I was told to call at 10%. If I have to call a week ahead, thats not automatic delivery. I sometimes travel & will need to do so soon as Im expecting my first grandchild any day. I mentioned all of the above to the woman here in Greenfield, MA. She has no empathy, put me on hold & then returned to tell me her supervisor told her she did everything right. Even if they bring fuel soon enough to avoid freezing my pipes or putting me in hospital- I will be finding a new company for the future. I feel this company is recklessly irresponsible with peoples health & property- claiming to provide auto-delivery & failing to either pull it off or reliably remedy the situation when they fail to do so! All of which is much worse by office staff who is more concerned with whether she did everything right than whether her customers & their plumbing freeze! Even when the response was better, its just not a viable option for someone who travels to buy fuel from a company that cant manage to pull off automatic deliveries.

Consistenly Terrible Service

Suburban says they keep your LP tank full automatically. This I a lie. Every winter I run out of fuel at least once. I notice that my tank is getting low. I call and call but they don't deliver for days. Usually I have to heat my home with a woodstove until they arrive. The local office won't answer the phone thus week. Calls are routed to New Jersey where we are told that the local office must handle the problem. Stay away from these crooks!

Bill, poor customer service, and unable to accommodate my needs

I set up service with this company. They could not meet my needs nor did they try very well. I was promised to have my tank filled on our move in day for our new house. They dropped the tank off and left it up to my plumber to get everything plumbed in. After this was all done they couldnt come fill it up for another two weeks. I had to remove the tank myself in order for a different company to set their tank. I was later sent a $437 bill and had not used any of their services. I had a call back from the manager that stated he would adjust the bill but was not taking the $139 for dropping the tank off. This is a terrible company to do business with. I highly recommend to stay away from them.

Horrible company!

Account issues. They lied and said a payment was not paid and closed my account. Now they can open an account but with no payment options only cash on delivery. WHY DID THEY MAKE ME CALL CORPORATE TO RE OPEN A ACCOUNT FOR COD SERVICES? REALLY???

Constant Incorrect Billing/Unauthorized Scheduling of Delivery

In August, I call to obtain price per gallon as I own my tank and can shop around during the summer. Never did I schedule any appointment. A few days later, a delivery truck arrives and said a delivery was scheduled. When I said I did not schedule a delivery the reason given was "Well sometime the girls just schedule them". Since the price I was quote was only a few cents different, I had him top the tank,119 gals. I informed him the price I was given when I noticed the invoice was showing a much higher price. I was told his system does not know special pricing and I would get the price quote when it processed. Received a bill for over $800 more than twice the price it should have been if they followed through on the given price. I called and had to provided copy of the technicians receipt showing number of gallons since even that was incorrect in their system. After almost two months of calling and approx 5 bills. I finally got a correct amount over the phone and paid the bill in full. Excuses given, were system issues, staff shortage (they quit I was informed), and sometime they just not know what to do. A client should NEVER have to call this often to get a mistake on their books corrected. Icing on the cake was latest bill showing a late fee. I will never use this service again!!!

Billing system is atrocious

I have never seen a company with such a confusing billing set up in my life. The website is the opposite of user-friendly. It needs a revamp. Customer service reps are super polite, but some have not been equipped with the information to where they can even explain it to us. We are super frustrated and looking for a different carrier. If the billing history was easier to read, we would have no issue.

Hoping to warn others to stay away

This is the worst company I have EVER used. I bought a house in 2019 with a leased underground propane tank. I was told theres only three years left on the lease, assuming I would pay lease for three years and then own it (never having used propane before). 2 years in I called to ask when I would own it exactly because Suburban is charges me DOUBLE what other companies charge! Staff told me I would never own it. My contract states that they can sell the tank in certain situations, they just refuse to do so even though information was mis-communicated to me and I did not fully understand what I was signing. Additionally, this company has said to me, an underground leased tank thats very unusual. No kidding! Why do they do this?! The tank is probably 15 years old and I offered to buy it from them! They still say no and that they will sandblast it, refurbish it, and then reuse it. I told them my yard is completely fenced now so removal would be inconvenient. They dont care. They said they will bring a crane to remove it. How is more cost effective than letting me buy this old underground tank?! Also, they say I must excavate it. No company will do this for less than $1000 and I was told its so close to the concrete holding one of my deck posts up that a jack may need to brought it to hold my deck up so it doesnt collapse, which will cost even more. I will also have to remove part of my fence to have necessary equipment brought it. I have tried to compromise with this company but they want to bleed my dry. My cost per gallon is SO high. They have my usage amount way lower than it really is because of past delivery screw ups on their end. The manager was nice and supposedly asked his boss if they could sell the tank to me. He said just wanting to own it wasnt a good enough reason. Thats not my only reason! I plan to rent an above ground from another company. This tank will stay put for now and rot. I am looking for into hiring a lawyer. Even if I dont order propane, the company will charge me a yearly rental fee, apparently until I die because even though I signed a three year contract, it renews annually and is binding. I wish for this company to sink like the Titanic. This company has raped me on prices for three years. I have PTSD from this experience. Goodbye

No response to 4 attempts

I already explained in detail in my original complaint. My house burned down in caldor fire. They picked up destroyed tank and still billing me! No response to emails. I maiked copies of their receipt of tank puck up. They don't answer phone, they don't write back, they don't follow through. It has been over a year now???

They are terrible

You never checked my meter all winter long, 4 months later I'm sent a bill and expected to pay the whole thing all at once. When I called there office they said I could pay 100.00 a month until payed and I did that faithfully but then 4 months later I'm getting all these phone calls threatening to shut me off. I seriously might go to the news media because this just isn't right

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service experience from their entire staff. They give you conflicted information after service is surrender. Only offering excuses and not value the customer concerns. With the resolution of providing excellent customer service. I would like corporate number to express my disappointment with Fernandina,FL office.
