THE WORST MOVERS

I hired this company in December of 2018. First of all there were 3 lazy men who moved me that started off wasting time before getting started. Second, I moved 90% of my apartment myself including all boxes. I only needed them to move 2 rooms of furniture and it took 3 men 5 whole hours. Third, they were to tired to bring a headboard upstairs so they left it in my garage. Fourth, they didn’t put my bed together correctly, which caused me to sleep on the floor. Fifth, they had to come back the next day to fix the bed. I also told them about a dresser draw they broke and scratches on the hardwood floor that they caused and have done nothing about it. I repeat DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY THEY ARE A RIP OFF!

Resolved: The worst experience of moving ever

Disregard review. This happened many years ago

Original review Aug 26, 2018
3 movers arrived and first question was do I tip. Found out I didn’t need to tip since they stole money from my nieces purse. Stole a ring from my dresser drawer refused to move a outside bbq after being told they could. Took hours to bubble wrap increase time instead of bringing moving pads as I asked for. Stole a boom box bag of pennies I was 60 years old and outworked the movers BEWARE of using them.

Refund not provided after several attempts

Had two pack-out dates change to one pack-out date. Starving Students sent a Sub-contractors or move me. Job was not completed, refund of one original pack-out date was not refunded, and no one was talking to me. Starving Students was passing it over to sub-contractor who would not respond.

Don't use this company they refer all their jobs to a third party!!

I contracted with STARVING STUDENTS to move three items (refrigerator, dish washer and stove). Starving Students subcontracted to Henry Moving! Painful lesson learned, find out who will be actually doing the work!! Under no circumstance use these people!!!! the following happened to me. A. I have not received a receipt for my payment to Henry Moving. B. My refrigerator was damaged during the MOVE! The refrigerator was not transported upright (Moving 101# tells you to always transport refrigerators upright). During the reassembly of the refrigerator it was plugged in per instruction of the DRIVER. The best practice after moving a refrigerator is keep it unplugged for 24 hours, in order for the gases to resettle! The refrigerator now needs to be serviced!!! C. The moving team had the wrong address for the pick-up and delivery site. They didn't have any IDs or uniforms ( a tee shirt with the company's name on it would suffice. My female relative was nervous to let them in the apt.). The truck was not marked and decrepit. This is not what I expect from Professional Movers. I agree with Toni S. someone must be paying for the positive reviews!!! D. Their alleged customer service dept. is unresponsive they do not return telephone calls. They have referred me to the third party who did the work. They are not assuming any responsibility for their contractor. I am completely dissatisfied with the service which is unacceptable given the amount of money that was charged. This is the first review I have ever written! They are that bad!!!! Kevin L.

Worst experience

They never showed up. No manager would call me. The driver told me with 1 hour left in he window that he was going to be about 2 hours late. Then when that time came and went I called the driver and he said it would be another hour. I finally get a call from who I thought was a manager. He wasn’t. He hung up on me and wouldn’t listen to me asking for a manager. Now the driver won’t answer. I have no clue if they are showing up or not. Literally worst experience I’ve ever had.

Nothing up my sleeve ---Do not use Starving Students Movers

I scheduled Starving Students movers to come on a Tuesday. They said the availability was from 1pm-5pm. That was great because I work graveyard and needed to sleep a few hours before the move. I had a contract and we had agreed on 2 guys and a truck for $110 per hour. Moving day: 11:30am the mover calls to say he will be there in a few minuets. I asked them to wait another half hour because since they were early I had not gotten my dog to the day care yet. I gt back to my place at noon and the movers were there....well, not Starving Students, but a different company, with three guys. (Not 2) I told the main guy that I had only wanted 2 guys and couldn't afford 3. He asked me what my budget was and that he could work with me. (RUDE!) The move was OK and the guys did work hard. They were done after 1 trip and I tipped them all well because they had saved me some money - Except I realized later they hadn't, they just wrote the invoice incorrectly. Since my budget was $500, including tip, and the bill said $350 at the end, I tipped each guy $50 so It was still $500 - Except there wasnot mention that this price was IN ADDIRON TO my deposit - So I ended up spending $600.00!

Horrible

December 2017 is the date of the move I have about 3000.00 dollars of damage but did not purchase the extra insurance as I understand there might be scratches and a few items might break, I was not prepared for the amount of preventable damage to my items. The items arrived in a different truck then than they were loaded onto. I was told they would not do that. Then when they unloaded the items into our storage unit, they stacked garage tools on top of boxes marked FRAGILE. Broken legs on furniture, numerous scratches and gouges on a handpainted Japanese screen, chunks of wood missing from my dining room table and chairs, broken scrolling on our antique Chinese bench, broken marble slab, broken mirror for the antique dresser, broken headboard, scratched footboard on another bed, broken lamp, broken back of our electric recliner. My great grandmothers desk chair had broken spindles on the back, The list goes on, This is not damage due to moving. This is damage due to careless and thoughtless moving. Starving Students did not take customary care of our household items. It was negligence, haphazardness, dereliction and pure disregard for our home goods. Starving Students has offered me 300.00 to cover the damage. Are you kidding me?? I would rather spend money to go to court! They did not use ordinary care. They used no care. Save your time, money and furnishings, Call a professional mover.. These pictures are just a sample of the damage

Original review May 03, 2018
I called and scheduled a move in Oct 2017. I called and confirmed the move date in advance to make sure we had no issues. The rep said no problem the guys will be there to move you and should be no issues. I had to have the home vacant by the weekend. I was scheduled from 8 to 10 am, two guys came one fairly young the other a little older. They arrived in a Budget Rental truck and had me sign all the paper work. He then told me that they charge to wrap the mattresses or I could do it myself. The came ill prepared for the move. The came with ONLY 6 blankets for the move and I was told that they would have all the equipment needed for the move. I had not choice at this point but to let them move because I could not reschedule the move. They did not arrive until 10:30 and loaded the truck until 5pm rush hour traffic time as they planned it. Because they charge more for the drive time. Because they did not have enough blankets to cover the Items they were damaged. VERY BAD Service, I gave them things to use to protect my items. They assured me that It is fine we should have no issues they have done this in the past. WRONG when they unloaded my new refrigerator was damaged and scratched which cost me more that this move. They said to file a claim on the issues and they will take care of this. So I filed the claim on all the items damaged. They never got back with me on the claims. They do not care they are not the ones with the damaged items. They got there money, it is your loss as they do not care. I am at work and do not have the pics to attach have no words to describe this company and practices.

Buyer beware

I wish I would have read these reviews before booked my move. Moving is stressful enough and these movers made it worse. Three days before The move I started calling the company to find out what time the movers would be arriving on Thursday since that is the day they were scheduled. Tuesday When I called the receptionist informed me that the movers would call me the night before and give me the time. I explained to her that was not acceptable as I was planning to work a half a day and needed to plan. Wednesday I called and spoke to someone at the conpany that had been my point person And was promised a call from dispatch which never came. Thursday morning I called again find out what time they would be arriving to be told that somebody would call me back from dispatch. When dispatch called back they informed me that because it was a long distance move they had the day that the movers scheduled and the day after to do the pick up. I Informed them that that was not acceptable as every document I had stated the pick up would be on Thursday and that I was leaving for the drive myself early Friday morning. They did manage to get the move scheduled for Thursday afternoon after I complained to multiple levels within their company. When the movers arrived they informed me that I would need to pay the quote. No big deal, I expected that. I had done an online quote that came out to about $1500. No movers came to my house to assess the property that would be moved. I did however ask me to do a self assessment and send it back to them which came back at three times The price. A few weeks prior to the move after I did the assessment I called a contact at the company and spoke to them as I was concerned about the price difference. They assured me that while the final cost would be based on the weight of the move that it would be much closer to the $1500 quote and he had never seen it go up three times as much as the online quote. I Explained that I had another quote from another company that was comparable to be online quote of $1500 and if they couldn’t match the price I would be using the other company. Again I was assured that while they went on weight it shouldn’t be a problem. Imagine my surprise on the day of the move when the movers informed me they needed three times the original quote amount. The day after the move I requested the final invoice with weight of the truck and it came out surprisingly accurate to what I had guesstimated on the piece of paper. So close I question the accuracy of the weight. I moved cross country (Midwest to California) in the last 1 1/2)years prior to this most recent move. I had less furniture this time and went half the miles (Southern California to Northern California) and paid almost as much for the move. Something doesn’t add up... Moral of the story, buyer beware. I would highly recommend using almost anybody other than this company. The only upside is that the movers themselves were very pleasant

Hiring Starving Students was the Worse move we ever made.

Our move was scheduled for a Wednesday, they showed up Friday. The movers that showed up were subcontractors. We lived in an apartment complex and they couldn’t get an 18 wheeler through the gates. They brought in a u-haul to load our furniture and charged $500 for the smaller truck. After they left they went to a weigh station and texted us the weight as requested. We were moving from Northern California to Colorado. We waited over three weeks for our delivery and a different subcontractor arrived. Our furniture was going into a storage facility. Once again an 18 wheeler couldn’t maneuver in so another small truck was loaded and another $500 added. I was given the inventory list to check off items as they came off the truck. Some boxes had no stickers so they said to make tally marks on the bottom. Some items on the list were not checked as being unloaded. At the end the tally marks did not coincide with the unchecked boxes, but one of the movers tried to tell me it matched up. Luckily I did notice a piece of furniture was missing. They brought me to the semi which was parked outside the facility and my piece was under a mountain of somebody else’s stuff. When all was done my husband paid them and asked for a copy of the manifest. They told him he didn’t get a copy but if he contacted starving students they would send him one. On the bill they charged us for storage because THEY didn’t deliver, the weight charge was different because they said the initial weight wasn’t done at a “certified” scale and of course $1000 for the two smaller trucks. We have tried to get the manifest for 3 months. We have disputed our credit card charge and they are “investigating”. And finally, after they said I received everything, the next day the storage facility called and said the movers were back with a box that was ours. AWFUL SERVICE!

Terrible

They scratched my furniture, but offered no solution. They tried to rip me off on the price, but got caught. They were extremely late. When I complained I never heard back from them, in other words they don't care. I would give me a 0 star rating. This is a company that does not care about their customers since I emailed a complaint and never heard back from them at all. Also, you would think when they scratch an expensive piece of furniture that they would care enough to at least apologize, but never heard anything from them about this. Use at your own risk DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

Do Not Use Starving Students for your move

I had used Starving Students (2) x in the last 4 years and had great results. What I was not told when I called this time, is that Starving Students no longer does the actual move themselves - they broker the moves out. They guaranteed me a Saturday move between 8 - 12 noon. They charged a deposit 12 days in advance to guarantee this date/time. The Friday before the move they provided a confirmation - then later in the day they changed the time from 1-5 instead of 8 - 12. When I called to advise them that this was unacceptable because I had scheduled other services for the afternoon based on my am appointment with them, I found out that the person who I made the appointment with had forgotten to submit my order and now I did not have an appointment at all for Saturday. I got no help from dispatch and was told to contact the movers directly. The moving company was the one that told me that they just got the order and would not be able to move me until SUNDAY. I had no choice but to accept this, but it wreaked havoc on my move, cable companies, internet service appointments, etc. My husband and I ended up physically moving much more than we intended to personally move. This resulted in physical injuries and a visit to the Dr.'s office after the move was finally over. FYI, the movers on Sunday, showed up 4 hours late. The whole experience was a nightmare. I tried to file a complaint with Starving Students; they never even had the courtesy to call me back. DO NOT USE STARVING STUDENTS.
