Injured Puppies

Updated by user Mar 07, 2022
We were told in October and November the check was in the mail to cover our Vet bills. Nothing has arrived.

Original review Mar 07, 2022
I have two puppies that we through training in the fall. The training ended with a horrific injury to both of my dogs necks from a collar malfunction. I'm horrified with how my franchise handled everything. The lack of professionalism and knowledge could have prevented alot of the issues. They promised to cover my vet bills at the time and swore the check was in the mail in November. At this point I have lost all faith in dealing with them and would just like my money back so I can move on get my puppies the help they deserve. I have pictures and medical documentation that I have provided the franchise through the whole process. I would greatly appreciate it if someone from corporate could contact me to help resolve this.

Horrible experience with Sit Means Sit

I would never in a million years recommend this TOXIC company and their only method is negative reinforcement which they like to call redirection. I forever regret bringing my dog hear. My dog is a 10 month old puppy and they were basically shocking my little girl over and over again. I was not told during my consultation what the collar actually was and never once was told that actual electricity flows through it to your dogs neck. After training day 1, I immediately pulled her out of it. They tried getting me to sign a ridiculous agreement in order to get my refund back. Nope. Not signing it. Do not bring your dog hear. Instead; read legit reviews and spread the word.

Concern about welfare of dogs in training

This morning, 9/11/21, I was walking in Mason Park in Irvine, where an instructor from Sit Means Sit was teaching a class. It was very hot, yet the instructor was teaching in a bright, sunny area and the dogs (and owners) seemed to be suffering from the heat. About 12 feet away, there was a nice, shady area. Why did he not hold his class there?

Utah lost the best , when bought out by these people

They came here to Utah and took over a very special team of trainers, and promised to keep the trainers when they took over, in the contract. But instead they got rid of them breaking the contract, by not paying them what they are worth to make them have to quit. Is this good business, I don't think so.

Unaware Unable to Return Product

We adopted a rescue dog. From the very beginning the dog could not function with the collar. Even a trainer was unsuccessful. I called the company to return it and was told unable to return a used item. Do not buy any collars from them. Only buy from Sportdog as they have a 45-day return policy and make the collars so Sit Means Sit may place their name on them.

First-hand experience with this business

I am a Canine Behaviorist and Ex. Director for Lake Tahoe Wolf Rescue. I have been doing behavior modification for over 45 years. I observed an SMS training session and was horrified to watch them "punish" the dog if it did not do what they wanted it to do, rather than using the Reward system. They shocked this dog over and over to make him SIT on a platform for hours. Currently one of the rescues I am working with - not a wolfdog just a northern breed Husky - underwent a course with SMS and now he is so resource protective he will bite if his owner goes near him unexpectedly or surprises him. The anxiety level is at a 10. I learned that another dog was enrolled recently in their program and this dog NEVER had a biting issue until he received numerous shocks from their "training collar." This business is just a money maker for the humans and they do not care about the emotional welfare of the dogs. shame on them. SMS should be put out of business. SOON

Unnecessary Euthanasia

I work at a vet clinic and we had a dog come in today to be put down. She was not even 3 years old. She had gotten into a dog fight and was assumed to be the aggressor. To break up the fight her owner tazed her with a self defense tazer meant for people. They immediately wanted to euthanize but Sit Means Sit took her. They had her for about a month when she supposedly attacked a worker there. That's when they scheduled an appointment to have her put down. When they scheduled the appointment they said she was too aggressive and dangerous and that there was no other option. When the worker dropped her off at the clinic she said the dog only gets worked up if the environment is crazy. When she came in she was underweight and, while she was a little nervous, she was calm. She did not tug on the lead. Not once did she give any fearful/aggressive glances. When we put a muzzle on her she did not fight or try to take it off. When I went to retrieve her from one of our kennels I was able to slip the lead on her with no issue and she stood up to follow me. She was perfectly leash trained. She sat when we said sit, and she stayed when there were multiple people and dogs coming in and out of the room. She was a beautiful girl who was given up on. By no means should she have been put down. She was left alone in a new place with people she did not know and she peacefully sat in my lap while we put her to sleep. It was by far the hardest thing I have experienced while working with animals. I would have given up anything if it meant I could give her another chance at a happy life. Sit Means Sit gave up on a young dog who could have been rehabilitated and been able to live a long happy life.

Animal cruelty!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today drove by Sit Means Sit business around 2:15 in the afternoon, it was a fairly hot day in the 80's. I was stopped at a traffic light that just turned red, waited until it turned green, proceeded to drive down the street of the business and passing the business, all the while two trainers were "training" two dogs, making the dogs stay seated for much too long on the hot pavement of the parking lot underneath the direct sun!!! If it’s 77 degrees outside, pavement that’s been sitting in sun can potentially be up to 125-degrees. When the temperature gets up to 87, that asphalt temperature grows to a paw-burning 143 degrees!! I'd like to know how this is acceptable. If you're in the business to service animals know the creature you're dealing with! This is abuse!! It doesn't take a genius to notice how hot the pavement is, the employees should test the pavement themselves and realize its much too hot for their furry clients. I'm not a customer of this business and will never be not would I ever recommend them to anyone that lives their pet and wants what's truly best for them, I think its terrible that their only means of correction comes from a shock collar and to add what I viewed today just makes me sick!! I will be sure to drive by this location, especially on a hot day like today and when I see this again I will be sure to take a video!!

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE

Updated by user Apr 01, 2020
its been a month since i wrote my review and the company has not even bothered to try and resolve this. I hope for the sake of your dog you dont go here

Original review Mar 02, 2020
I took my puppy here because he was a German Shepard which I knew meant he would become very strong and big. So I wanted to take him to be trained to be a productive and well behaved part of the family. So I paid $1400 to the sit means sit in Modesto ca for him to stay a week for training. When there I was told I would get a video 3 days of the week and more if i asked. I only ever received one very blurry video. When i picked my pup up he was not the same. He came home and was no longer potty trained, he was out of control any time his collar would be charged and unless we had the remote in our hands at all times he would act out. I reached out to them and was told they would come help but never told a time or date. About 5 months passed when my Smart and now bad behavior out of control puppy started getting into my neighbors yard by actually pulling fence boards off of my fence he would chew the boards until they would get lose and he could lift it with his nose. One day he got threw and killed the neighbors pet bunny and the pound took my pup. When I reached out to sit means sit for a reimbursement of my money for not properly training my puppy they told me no but he can come for training. Which of course was not an option when I no longer had my puppy because he was out of control. Id like to mention he did have his collar on and despite us using it fully charged he did not come sit or follow the off instructions. This facility is not only a joke but doesn't care about your pet only the money.

Do not take your dog their, they don’t fulfill their promise

I signed my dog up. I took longer than most people to complete his classes, due to family matters and a death in family. I went back for his 2nd class, but I was told I would have to pay $100. Every time Rusty attend class from here on out. I was confused, because I paid for his classes in full in the amount of $990. I asked why go I have to pay to bring him to class from here on out? I was told I don’t know. I asked so what happened to the money I payed I don’t know this is what I was told. I haven’t completed his training also because I have arthritis, fibromyalgia, and neuropathy and my medication has been reduced so I’m in much more pain than usual. How do I get a refund from this company. Rusty has only gone to two classes.

My dog was hurt by Sit Means Sit trainer!

READ BEFORE YOU GO TO SIT MEANS SIT DOG TRAINING! Our family adopted a 7 month old pit bull mix. As you can imagine, she was very energetic and needed training in a few areas. We went for a consultation at Sit Means Sit. The guy we met with was a salesman, not a trainer. He talked a good game and made it sound amazing. They use a collar.... It's a shock collar but they called it an e collar. The salesman put the prongs of the collar on our hand to show us what it felt like. Of course he had it on a very low setting and it didn't hurt at all. He said it's just like a tap on the shoulder to the dogs....just gets their attention. He showed us videos of dogs doing amazing things afterward just one session. We signed up for 4 day training sessions. A couple weeks later, I left our dog, Tessie. for an all day session. When I returned, I was immediately struck by how sad and upset she looked. I mentioned it to the trainer and was told that she was just tired. He was demonstrating what she learned and how we could continue at home. At one point, she yelped in pain. I was shocked and the trainer could see that. He said she's not hurt.. she's just frustrated because she has to follow commands instead of doing what she wants. After I left, I had a bad feeling about it. I just didn't want to take her back. I spoke with the owner about my concerns and after a very lengthy conversation, she convinced me to give it another try. After her second all day session, my husband and I went to get her, it was the same scenario. She looked dejected! I noticed her collar was extremely tight. I said something to the trainer but he said it was fine. Again she yelped in pain at least twice during his demonstration because he was shocking her! I got the same response.... She's not hurt, just frustrated. Also, she had been there over 8 hours and he kept pushing her to do things over and over again when she was clearly exhausted. Imagine being pushed to follow commands all while continuously being shocked for 8-10 hours! My husband and I both left upset and vowed not to return. We got home to discover her neck had pressure ulcers because of how tight the collar was. I believe she was traumatized there. All we have to do is show Tessie the collar and she runs away! The training is extremely expensive. They have you sign a contract and make payments. I told them I would not be back and would not give them any more money. They sent me to collections! I am posting this so hopefully prevent this from happening to others.

Exceptional Experience

We have an almost 2-yr-old German Wired Hair pup that we took to Sit Means Sit in Knoxville TN. The breed is very eager to learn, a lot of energy, and can certainly be a handful. Jimmy and and his team did an amazing job with him. He and his team are very knowledgeable and walked us through the training process. We watched videos of the training and can see that his tail is up and he is focused on the trainers. I would recommend the Knoxville team to all!

My dog is now dead

We allow these people to, take our 8 mth old puppy for boarding and training $2400 She had some aggressive issues, but a very sweet, intelligent, loyal family member. She was taken 4th of July week of 2018. The dog came back completely stressed out, SHE HAD BURN MARKS UNDER HER NECK, that is when we found out that the collar WAS A SHOCK COLLARD, AND NOT THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY BS THAT THEY HAD SOLD US I USE IT ON MYSELF, I FELT HORRIBLE FOR PUTTING MY DOG THROUGH A NIGHTMARE WITH COMPLETE STRANGERS WHO HAD SHOCKED HER FOR THREE WEEKS. WE QUESTIONED THE TRAINER WHEN HE RETURNED HER, she was not trained to do to much or anything. what that money got us was a damaged dog, the trainer kept in touch, but no quick reply, THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE LIFETIME A LIE HE NEVER REPLIED TO MY TEXTS AND CALLS agreed that we SHOULD MEDICATE THE DOG, WHICH ONLY MADE HER SICK SHE CAME HOME LOSS HER HAIR, HAD URINARY TRACT ISSUES, MORE AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS OTHER DOGS THEY SENT US 2 PICTURES WHILE SHE WAS GONE, ONE IN FRONT OF A BIG TV, AND ANOTHER OUT SIDE SITTING ON HER MAT NEXT TO OTHER DOGS AS SHE GREW, SHE HATED OTHER DOGS, COULD NOT GO AROUND THEM WITHOUT HAVING HIGH ANIEXTY ATTACKS, AND WANTING TO ATTACK THEM. SHE attacked and bite two other dogs, bite me because she though i was going to take her bone when i was reaching down to adjust my shoe bone right there she should not have put her hand out. without my consent my partner and the vet deem her a dog that should be put down. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG TO THIS PLACE I BELIEVE OUR DOG WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN SO AGGRESSIVE IF WE HAD NOT ALLOW THEM TO TAKE HER. SHE WAS NOT TREATED WITH RESPECT AND CARED FOR. SHE HAD BURNS AROUND HER NECK FROM THE SHOCK COLLAR THEY TOLD US NEW TECHNOLOGY NO IT IS NOT IT IS A SHOCK COLLAR THEY DO NOT WORK WITH YOU, THEY TAKE YOU MONEY AND DAMAGE YOUR DOG SINCERELY JEANNE

DONT BRING YOUR DOG HERE. I WORKED HERE.

I worked here for a total of one week. Their training methods worked for maybe 3 of the dogs I worked with in the week I was there. What I saw behind closed doors disgusted me. One time the trainer was trying to get the dog it sit on top of an upside-down bucket, and the poor pup didn't want to and was being shocked and literally strangled, pulled up by his collar, hanging from the end of the leash kicking and screeching, choking and utterly terrified while the trainer forced him up. 2 other trainers just sat there and watched saying oh dear he's being so difficult today eh? I was like WTF! While working here I had to endure listening to dogs screeching and crying all damn day because they get electrocuted for not doing the right thing. Oh, and worst of all I has absolutely no dog training experience and they gave me the job telling me I would be fully trained. They gave me the remote after 3 days... Kept telling me to turn up the shock when the dog doesn't do what you ask. The trainers have no education and they just make you zap away until the dog does what you want. It's horrible. By the time you pick up your dog, sure they'll do what you want and you'll think they're so well trained but in reality they're broken and terrified...
