Sad…. No stars for OSCAR

Son adopted a young dog who became ill very shortly after bringing her home..recouped but it happened again and again until it became really bad and after several vet visits, mounting bills, dog was hospitalized..and has yet to fully recoverOscar says they had no cluereally? So sad..so unfair. It may affect the idea of adopting if the health of the animal is unknown and/or questionable

Perfect

We have adopted our Gus, Paige and Cheyenne from OSCAR. Wonderful help especially with Gus who is special needs. Would go to them for another fur baby in a minute. We continue us to try and support them as best we can.

The BEST !!!

We have adopted both our dogs from OSCAR( Sundae and Tucker) and we have had them already for about 5 yrs in total and they are great!! Dropped off some donations at OSCAR on Sparta Stanhope rd in Sparta, looks like it is coming along great!!! Wouldn’t adopt from any place else !!!!

Horrible Group

This is a corrupt organization that mistreats these poor animals without remorse. Go on the site 'Pissed Consumer' to hear the sad stories. The Director should be in jail...shame on you all. RIP Zippy

All about the money

I think that it's sad when these places ask so much money to ADOPT a pet. Some of these animals have serious issues and they should all be by donation ONLY and pet adoption should be free or close to it. They're asking a lot of money. $100- $350!! Adopting a pet should be free! It's not just OSCAR, it's becoming a serious business. What the heck are the fundraisers for? most of the people at these places don't volunteer, they get paid hourly or are salaried. They also do the easier jobs. The volunteers are always asked to do the dirty jobs. I'm sure it's not that way everywhere but... it seems like they're becoming the new (preowned)pet shops.

My heroes!

I worked with Oscar dooring adoption of ants and was always impressed by how they treat the animals and they are professional attitude but I had the privilege last weekend of adopting a dog from them. He is the most darling thing in the world and you would have died in a kill shelter if it weren't for them saving him and I thank them every day for that. I have nothing but respect for what they do and what they give up to do it

Adoption of Apache

I adopted my dog apache roughly 6 years ago. The process was effortless for me. My references were checked and my Vet was called. After that they did come out and do a home check and for my other dog to meet him. All went well and apache has been living the high life ever since. I have since been out to their new shelter and found it to be spotless and well run !

Arrogant, Dismissive Attitude Continues

Why are Negative comments about your TERRIBLE communication routinely deleted on Facebook? Why not apologize & try to improve? Why always blame the whistle blowers & use the pathetic go to excuse of being all volunteer-,which is NOT even accurate? Proceed with caution. They like full kennels and exploiting the advertising value of certain breeds. They have a comfort zone of an acceptable number of adoptions each week. They rarely check vet references or do home inspections. Very Disingenuous. It's a family affair catering to sisters, in-laws, family, friends and insiders only. Small circle of influencers. Opinionated Tight Group. It seems as though they really seek to just collect all your personal information. Wanna volunteer? Fill out the form. Wanna adopt? Fill out the other form. Wanna foster? Fill out the other form. They will only answer questions until you comply with filling out all their forms. Then, poof, you are dead and they disappear, dropping all communication. You are persona non grata and the animal in need is irrelevant. Most unusual, like a group of gypsy fortune telling thieves, using well wishers and honest volunteers who have no idea of how unkind and unprofessional the management really is. Sure they provide a service, but they are certainly in no hurry to get a dog out of the shelter and into loving arms. They accountable to no one. Cool cucumbers, slick, evasive, passive aggressive, egotistical, beyond dismissive, beyond arrogant, beyond Disingenuous! They are Very happy with themselves and pleased with their reputation. They are Great fundraisers. They are quick to blame those who know how rescues should be run and can be run. Previous complaints are a pattern of their behavior, not isolated incidents. There's a reason you can't talk to anyone. Like the Wizard of Oz, they hide behind the curtain of ignoring emails. " Listening is SO boring when it's the mind or wallet you hear and NOT the heart!" Spare your family the heartache, there are plenty of self-sacrificing, not self-serving, groups placing animals in need into loving homes! You'll NEVER get an apology or HONEST answer from this pack of wolves in sheep's clothing. The prettier or cuter the animal, the longer they'll hang on to it to drive Web traffic. Sadly, Decision makers are Irrational control freaks who should be ashamed of the business model they have adopted! They enjoy abusing potential adopters or it wouldn't be their business model. Carrie, as a "Professional", you KNOW better! You'd be fired if you treated your workplace like this! If you valued a Positive Customer Service experience, you would be Above Normal, rather than Abnormal! Why won't you strive to improve and be The Best? Put the Superior Attitude in your pocket, empty more kennel runs and quadruple your turnover rate of lucky pups. Be grateful so many want to open their hearts and homes. The Bitterness of Poor Treatment is Long Remembered after the Sweetness of a Cute, yet inaccurate, Dog Bio is Soon Forgotten! Ignoring people does NOT mean you have High Standards, it simply Proves you have LOW Class and CHOOSE to fly at an altitude BELOW customer expectation and BELOW the experienced and qualified Dog Lover level of acceptance! Shame on you! Get over yourselves and your misplaced security addiction! You are doing a Wonderful Thing in a Horrible Way! :( We only Curse the Darkness because You Spit Out the Light of Your Own Candle. :(

Disorganized People

Saw a dog that I loved, put in the application and was told it was adopted. Next day I got an email saying it was an error as Debbie didn't see it in the Kennel and it was in a Foster Home- resubmitted application. No reply, listed references including my Vet, and someone that had adopted from them this past year. Only reference that was checked was my Son and the woman asked if I were capable of taking care of a dog. I have had 2 rescues over the years. Also, Vet and other reference were never called. The woman was surprised that I had an acre of chainlink fenced in yard. Guess she never read my application. Next I was told the dog went to "a better fit". Nice wording! All their hype and fund raisers make me wonder why the volunteers aren't better trained. I tried to call Debbie & the Founder of OSCAR - no one called back.

One Step Closer Animal Rescue - Pet Adoption Review

I have adopted 3 dogs from O.S.C.A.R. My dad also adopted and so did my brother. The first pup I adopted I was surprised they actually called my landlord, vet and my referances. You see I have adopted before and they just took the fee and handed over the animal, but not O.S.C.A.R. They then called made an appointment and did a home visit, they made sure my home was safe, pet friendly and my other dog accepted the new edition. 5 years later we adopted a senior and again they checked everything and did a home visit. We only had 2 years with him until he passed and about 8 months later we adopted a dog that was rescued by O.S.C.A.R. after suffering horrible abuse. I found them to be the most caring rescue. Each pup came with all there medical records and they spent more money on vet bills then the adoption fee on the last two dogs, I know this because the bills were given to me when I signed the contract. When my dad wanted to adopted we were told straight out they pick the best home for the dog and although my dad had a great application they would not adopt a puppy or a young dog to him due to his age, we totally understood this and it took a while for him to locate the perfect dog. My whole family is so happy with our additions. We send updates to O.S.C.A.R. yearly. This is truely one rescue that cares. I notice most of the bashing is by one women who post over and over, she really sounds like she is nuts, probably the reason they would not adopt to her.

Lack of communication, poorly run rescue

We were interested in a extra large breed dog O.S.C.A.R. was advertising. The moment I saw him I knew he'd make the perfect addition to my home. I filled out an application on their website and sent it in. I read the entire website and it states it only takes them about 3-4 days to review an application, call your references, and set up a meet and greet. 2 days went by with no indication they received my application, none of my references had been checked and my vet wasn't called. The second night I decided to add them on my Facebook. I noticed they had posted a picture of the dog we wanted with the caption "Still need's a forever home!" I commented on the photo and stated who I was and that we had filled out an application for him and I was hoping to hear back from them. Whoever manages their Facebook liked my comment but never replied to it. A few hours later I checked back, and noticed my comment had been deleted. I was very upset and decided to send them an email the next morning which was Thanksgiving. I work in a big animal hospital and since we are open holidays I had been working all day never getting a chance to check my phone. They never emailed me back, nor called. By Friday night, still hadn't received any news, so I decided to message them a private message through their Facebook. I had noticed someone was constantly posting pictures of dogs that needed homes so I thought I may have some luck. I was right. Someone messaged me back within 20 minutes stating they were a volunteer and that they had contacted the "adoption division" about my application and they could not find it. I was told to resend my application via email vs through there website link. I went straight to the computer to resend my application and made it a point in my application to state that I worked in an animal hospital and we have also rescued dogs in the past. I then messaged the same person who contacted me via Facebook and told them that I resent my application and I was looking forward to hearing from them. It has now been 6 days since sending my application. I have heard no word from them at all! None of my references were called or my vet. I am very disappointed in this rescue. Other rescues we have used kept us in the loop the entire time, letting us know they received our application, calling references ect. I wish I would have looked up reviews prior to getting our hopes up and falling in love with the idea of rescuing another dog. PLEASE be careful when choosing a rescue. Many rescues are very high maintenance and it sucks to see so many pets sitting in cages because they are so picky as to who they adopt to. Not to toot my own horn, but if a family has rescued before, or works in the animal field this should make for an easy decision. This poor dog is still sitting in a cage, from what I can see on Facebook, and could have been in a loving home days ago. We have given up hope and I will never recommend this rescue to anyone!

Heartbroken & Lied to

I saw a pup that I absolutely fell in love with and immediately submitted an application. That weekend there was a pet adoption that I wanted to attend but as per their website it said to email 1-2 days prior to see if that pet would be at the event. I emailed and called and received no response. I took my chances and drove an hour away to see the pup, I got there early and anxiously waited. The cutie arrived and I spent time with him and had to keep getting on line over and over again as the person running the event, Debbie, kept moving all over. The event was very disorganized and could definitely use the help of the other volunteers that were there. I too am a volunteer and absolutely know what it takes to run events successfully. I have managed events with 100+ volunteers, so I have been in their shoes. When I finally got to speak to Debbie (after many many attempts) she told me that she wanted this new pup to meet my other pups at home. Ok, that’s fine. She PROMISED (used the words “I promise”) to call me that evening to arrange a meet. I know my pups would have been fine with him. He would have been an amazing addition! Sunday night comes, no call.. Monday no call.. Tuesday no call. I had been emailing and calling following up. Finally late Tuesday afternoon I received an email stating that my condo association does not allow three pets. That was false information and my property manager rectified the situation within two hours. I followed up and followed up and then 4 days later I was told “I’m sorry but we could not hold him (pups name withheld) and he was adopted.” I never ever asked them to hold him. I was ready to adopt him that day or any day after that worked for them. Others that had filled out an application the night before the adoption event and the day of got to take pups home with them without even checking if they had other pets at home or doing a home visit. Debbie simply took their word for it. I didn’t stay to try to reason (like some of the others) with Debbie, I simply followed her instruction and never got the time of day after that. I have amazing references, vet references, family & friends, I’ve been nothing but an amazing doggy mom. They come first in my life. A friend of mine inquired about the pup that following weekend and was told “I am very sorry but we chose to go with another application. For some reason we will have no interest in one of our fur babies then all of a sudden we will get hit with a bunch of applications in one day. We had no idea how popular “he” would be.” No interest? I was definitely interested and my interest in him was not minimal. I do NOT want to deter other pups from being adopted, all of these loving babies need homes no matter what shelter they come from. However, please be aware that you are dealing with an extremely disorganized group that in turn can end up in heartbreak.

O.S.C.A.R.a great organization WITH GREAT VOLUNTEERS

over many years I have adopted 3 dogs from Oscar, 2 from Barks, 1 from Pike County - O.S.C.A.R. was by far the best experience - they checked us out, they brought the most wonderful pups, they were vet checked - and teeth cleaned. They always were available for questions. And the most amazing thing is they have other lives, and they still have ENORMOUS passion for these animals. They have you fill out adoption paperwork, check your vet and references, as try to place each animal in the most stable environment. This description is running on as they demand 100 words

Wonderful Experience with O.S.C.A.R. Sparta N.J.

We recently adopted a beautiful puppy rescue from O.S.C.A.R. in Sparta N.J. The complete adoption process from submission of my application to going home with a great pup took two weeks. We met with Debbie who requested that our family and our other dog be present to ensure everything was going to be okay for the new puppy. Debbie was very helpful and went over the contract in great detail to ensure that this pup was going to a great, forever home. The adoption fee was very reasonable. Our pup visited his vet yesterday and got a clean bill of health. Those who are condemning O.S.C.A.R. should try to understand what is stacked against them. These are VOLUNTEERS who have families, jobs, etc. but still find the time to put in a lot of effort in finding homes for animals who would otherwise never have a chance. Remember, you are adopting a new member of your family. All factors need to be considered in an adoption and the volunteers of O.S.C.A.R. are ensuring that these rescues are going to the proper homes and families. If I would've judged O.S.C.A.R. on some of the negative posts I have read here at this forum, I would've have never adopted my beautiful pup. We have had him for only three days and love him so much. So, in closing, I stand behind O.S.C.A.R. and what they do. I have had a wonderful experience and would refer others to them with confidence. Debbie, thank you once again.

In Defense of OSCAR

I adopted my dog from OSCAR in 2011. Was she smelly? yes! Did her breath smell? yes! BUT SHE WAS ALIVE AND SAVED FROM BEING PUT TO SLEEP BY THE CARING VOLUNTEERS AT OSCAR. So I had to give her bath and get her a tooth brush and clean her teeth and even though she came with a clean bill of health and pet insurance for 30 days, I brought her to my vet anyway to have her checked out. She was fine besides having hookworm which comes from being in a shelter which was where she was before being rescued. My sweet crazy little Chihuahua is the love of my life and I can't thank the kind, dedicated people at OSCAR enough!!! For all you people out there complaining, you are hurting future animals from finding a forever home! These people volunteer their time and money to save these sweet innocent animals and no they are not perfect and neither are some of the animals. Take responsibility and do your homework before you decide to take in an animal that has been rescued from most likely a terrible situation.

Hit the jackpot

Three years ago I lost two shih Tzu's (16 years old) one from kidney failure, one from cancer, both were old - but I was sure they had a few more years. I contacted OSCAR, they had a shaved down big chubby shih Tzu - well long story short he's here now!! And he's a love; My elder mini dachshund is blind and I thought she'd like a 'similar' companion. I contacted Oscar - long story short - princess (mini dachshund)lives here now and is WONDERFUL. They contacted my vet, they did a house check. I must love these people, they brought soooo much love into my home.
