I want change!

I used to listen to NPR on the regular. However, this has changed since Ayesha Roscoe started covering the weekend news. My wife and I just cant seem to get on board with the hosts voice and pure non-journalistic delivery. The shrill and pitch of her voice is just unpleasant and the lack of substance in her input- lack of educated response makes it seems like I am listening to an amateur podcaster. Absolutely unacceptable.

Ayesha Rascoe

Listening to Ayesha Rascoe on Weekend Edition - is like : Elmo had a sister and shes hosting a national radio show. Like - Carol Channing has been reincarnated - like a Squirrell ate too many words and they are all scrambling to get out at the same time. Like Lily Tomlins , Edith Ann is rocking in a giant chair giggling at the every news story. My normally calm and serene Sunday mornings with NPR are now chasing a two year old around the house who got a hold of the mic and wont put it down. Ugh.

Reason for Membership Cancellation - Ayesha Rascoe

As a long-time listener and a monthly member of NPR, I have always appreciated the diverse range of voices and perspectives that the network brings to the airwaves. Unfortunately, I feel compelled to share that I've found Ayesha Rascoe's vocal delivery increasingly difficult to listen to. This is not a criticism based on her gender or race but purely on the auditory experience, I have when tuning in. In radio journalism, there is a soothing cadence and tonality that enhances storytelling and helps listeners engage with the content. Regrettably, in my opinion, Rascoe's vocal style doesn't align with this traditional delivery, and I often find it disruptive to my listening experience. Ms. Rascoe is undeniably intelligent and brings valuable insights to her broadcasts. However, given that intelligence is an expected attribute of any NPR presenter, I believe her delivery should also meet certain standards. I humbly suggest that she might consider refining her vocal modulation to better suit the medium. With a heavy heart, I have decided to cancel my monthly membership until there is a change in her presentation style. I genuinely hope that, with some voice training, Ms. Rascoe could adjust her style to provide a more engaging listening experience. This decision was not an easy one to make, but I believe it's necessary for me at this time. I look forward to the possibility of rejoining as a member in the future. I find it truly exasperating that seemingly no one at NPR has acknowledged this prevalent issue with Ms. Rascoe's vocal delivery, which desperately needs to be addressed for the sake of listeners' experiences.

@PissedConsumer231**** I agree! I have nothing against AR, and this has zero to do with race or gender. Its just the fact that her vocal range, tone, and grammatical delivery does not, and has never, belonged on radio.Judging by the number of complaints, NPR would be well served to listen to their support base, instead of doubling down on a poor hiring decision. We tried NPR, its been more than a year now and its not working! ARE YOU LISTENING NPR??

Can't listen to Weekend Edition due to unprofessional radio host

Maybe a year or two ago, NPR - apparently influenced by a push to accommodate "diversity, equity, and inclusion" principles - went overboard and elevated a young African American woman, Ayesha Roscoe, to serve as host of "Weekend Edition." It was a shockingly bad move. Roscoe's diction and delivery represent a bad case of "ebonics" that diminish the listener experience. I am aware many listeners have complained to NPR about this, but Ms Roscoe must have some influential boosters behind the scenes insisting on imposing her on the listener base. There are plenty of Black media personalities who speak English well and are sophisticated interviewers. Why is NPR sticking with someone who routinely mangles the English language and evokes the least respectable aspects of Black culture? NPR is a news broadcaster, delivering stories to a wide cultural audience. This requires hosts that exemplify that, not elevating some producer or sponsor's "pet project" of racial representation when it adversely affects the end user experience. Whoever is responsible for imposing Roscoe on the weekend NPR audience should be fired.

Disappointed with Sunday edition

I am a long time listener and contributor to NPR. Im also a liberal woman who supports the advancement of women of color. But Ayesha Rascoe is simply not capable of hosting Sunday edition. Her poor grammar, loud, inappropriate laughter and inability to connect with the people she interviews make listening to her impossible. The long pauses as she seems to have lost her place in the script are particularly annoying. Ive tried for a year but I just cant listen anymore. I still tune in for the Puzzle, which I love. but I just cant stand to hear two hours of Ayesha. Please consider returning to the level of professionalism and quality hosting that you are known for.

Love NPR...but Ayesha Rascoe's voice!

I love NPR and have been a dedicated listener for decades. However, the host Ayesha Rascoe seems ill-equipped for her role as a host/reporter. It seems that the programs that she is the new voice of have degraded to high school homeroom announcement time. Not to simply focus on the shrill unlistenability, she brings an irritating naivete. Im sure she is a wonderful person. I am not attacking her person. Just the fit for the job. Please consider a better fit.

Aisha Roscoe is UNLISTENABLE. I now longer even turn on the radio on Sunday mornings.

Her voice is HORRIBLE. And, her level of enthusiasm belies her lack of objectivity. Who gave her this job and why? Because she is black, and speaks in a way that she claims has people expressing how it is "good to hear someone who SOUNDS like them..." Seriously? What, nasal, high pitched, grating and horrible... People like to hear someone who sounds like that, because it is familiar? Listen, on the radio, all that matters is the voice itself, or at least that is the MAJORITY of the gig. Okay, so besides the voice, she just isn't any good as an interviewer or commentator. She reminds me of someone on a small college station filling a slot that no one else wants... When you get rid of her, I will return and donate again... not until. I used to love that show... Saturday mornings are still wonderful...

Inability to continue to listen to Aisha Roscoe on Sunday mornings

Original review Apr 09, 2023
I listen to NPR every morning from 8-10 am but can no longer do so on Sunday mornings. Ayesha Roscoe has absolutely the worst and most grating radio voiced I have ever heard. Her screeches, screams, yells and cackles are simply unbearable to me; and I find it difficult to believe that I am alone in these judgments. PLEASE find somebody else for this important show so I can start listening to it again!

Can't stand Ayesha Rascoe. Can't listen to NPR Sunday Morning.

I can't listen to Sunday Morning any more. I can't stand more than a few minutes of Ayesha Rascoe's voice. I still try to tune in for Will Shorts and The Puzzle, but she is particularly bad during the few minutes with Will. I am a long time sustaining member and I still listen on the other six days.

I rejoiced when Ayesha Rascoe was on a two week vacation from NPR's Sunday morning broadcast at 7 am, CST. Her voice is like COARSE SANDPAPER ON AN OPEN AND RECENT WOUND. Please re-assign her.

Just re-assign her to a remote time. I just turn off NPR now at her time. Silence is golden... Donna Bauerly

Resolved: Ayesha Rascoe

Complaint noted.

Original review Apr 17, 2022
It's true, I am white and Ayesha is black, but I'm writing because while I have no complaints about NPR ... I take exception Ayesha Rascoe's assignation of vowel sounds. I wholeheartedly agree that Black Lives Matter, and I support diversity within your ranks, but I am no longer able to listen to Weekend Edition Sunday because Ayesha's manner of speaking is as awkward as the author misspelling words. I couldn't listen to Julia Childs because it was more about her delivery than her message. However, with Ayesha's incredibly harsh vowel sounds (consistently a, e, and i and especially in the second syllable). I feel like I am being punished. NPR made its choice. Now I will make mine and I will not be listening on Sunday mornings. If you don't enjoy Brussel Sprouts, you don't keep eating them just to prove you are unbiased. Eventually, we learn to just say, "No, thank you".
