Homelessness / Advanced Training Student

Hello, Im Tynieka DeShields. Im an Advanced Training student here at Turner Job Corps in Albany, Georgia. Before I transferred to this school from Oneonta, NY the instructor that I spoke to over google video chat told me that they would help with housing students with apartments as they transition out. I have been at Turner for 15+ months. Not only am I leaving without my CDLs and apartment which was promised, but for as long as I have been here I have been bullied my staff on a daily basis (especially in dorm), told that I was going to get the help that I needed but never did (by instructors and CTR), and when I did find a resources without their help, they are ready to claim that the move was done by them and put their name on it, like for Work Base Learning. I found the job that Im currently working at but the Work Base Learning and CTR instructors are claiming I found the job through them but the Work Base Learning instructor told me that they dont have Work Base Learning through my trade. Theyll do anything to make it look like theyre doing something. They put me on the back burner, making it look like they care and are working and keep selling some dream that theyll put me in the Union as a Heavy Equipment Operator, help me find an apartment or car and have done NONE. These people are beyond lazy and dont commit to any students on this campus unless theyre screwing them. They want you to give sexual favors in exchange for help and I refuse to degrade myself for something that is THEIR JOB. Im an excellent student, I do my job every single day to the best of my ability, continue to learn something new everyday and dont have not one bad case note if you can check into my profile. Even the current job Im working my supervisor is pleased with my skills and actually encourage me to further my career. To continue on, Its honesty pathetic how this place is ran and still running even. They have mold all through out these dorms, hanging wires and tore up/leaking ceilings all the dorms, they throw out a lot of students accommodations, the consolers are extremely unprofessional and hide from the students and when you do get in touch with them, they have a disgusting attitude like youre bothering them, the CTR teacher doesnt do ANYTHING expect be on her phone and wonder whats shes eating for lunch everyday instead of assisting students, and honestly I have screenshots of messages that I could send you on how much these people will try to play games like theyre doing something but dont do anything. I have pictures of them mold and leaks, and I have plenty of students that can vouch how much these people treat and talk to us. Since Corporate will be visiting this campus within two weeks, all of a sudden everyone is trying to make it seem like theyre committed to their job and helping students by swiftly trying to get rid of the ones who have enough sense to tell on them and pushing their projection date forward to avoid any mishaps. For the longest they told me that my projection date was the 28th only three days at Work Base Learning they change my projection date to the 23 of this month and suggested that I go to the homeless shelter. Why would I go to the homeless shelter if yall claimed yall help with housing??? And why wait so late in order to help with housing??? They should have found ways to find me a place MONTHS AGO. This as been such an upsetting experience that I actually think I have to take therapy from after I leave and I pray they get do something to change the dynamic of this campus and the people that they hire. But to change anything you have to start at the head. If they cant make change, just shut it down and suggest other Job Corps across the map because this one has been an HORRIBLE nightmare. Please let me know if you need the provided screenshots and pictures.

I recommend goi g to the best Center you can if you have not gone to one before. I went to the one in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and O did not feel welcome at all.

I was bullied for my disability starting on my first day in July of 2018. During the next February I caught a concussion because, a female who was also a student at that time crashed her head into mine, and acted like the whole thing was my fault even though I could not see her until just before it happened, and for like three seconds I stool stalk still unable to move. I was asked if I was okey but, I couldnt respond right away, and I did not even know then that I was not. I was not taken to a hospital for it until 3 days later after falling on the floor in a dorm on that I was staying in during that time period, and I fell forward. I felt really weak, and I could barely walk just then. My eyes were dilated but, I could not feel any physical pain then. None of the people who worked in the Welles's Center let me rest to get better from it at all. I had it until early in May.

Don't go.

My time at Job Corps was pretty tame. I went to the San Marcos, Texas location. Not gonna say what my trade was, or when I went. All I'll say is this. After exiting the program, the people who were supposed to aid me in finding a job, didn't. They made claims that I would be sent a bus ticket, or gas money, maybe rides to interviews. None of these promises were kept. To make matters worse, I've been looking for open positions relative to my trade, only to be told one of three reasons. One- The interviewer has never heard of the Job Corps program and doesn't trust it's legitimacy. Two- They have heard of Job Corps via outside sources and want nothing to do with it. Three- They have hired people through Job Corps, and their work ethic/performance was lacking heavily. I'm even having trouble getting a job in fast food, due to it. All people see is either Job Corps, or a massive gap in my resume.

Do not send your kids! Unless you research first.

Gary Jobcorps Center in Texas My son went to Gary Center in San Marco's this past August. He lasted 2 days. I was deeply afraid for his safety amid the illegal drug activity led by gang members. My son is Caucasian young man from Montana. He landed Monday I got him plane ticket and Uber ride Wednesday. He was safely back home Wednesday night. I am not an aggressive person by nature and have been told I can very patient. However, I lost that patience when one of the staff at the center told me I had to follow procedures and that my son could not leave. As a mom already feeling horribly guilty and afraid for my kid who was states away... I lost it! I even told the Uber driver to let me know if he had any issues in picking him up. I was concerned they were not going to let him out of the front gate! It a horrible traumatize experience for my son! Please don't trust your local recruiter and don't trust anyone from any if these centers unless you personally can go see for yourself. They should allow for unannounced tours so the staff don't have time put on their safe, and caring facade.

Don't send your kids here.

I'm a current student here at Job corps they mistreat you, staff treat you as if you're dumb, they have favoritism towards certain students, they pick and choose who gets terminated and who stays even if both deserve to be terminated. The food most of the time undercooked. chicken would be pink inside, not fully cooked, the higher position staff can sometimes be rude. RA's are rude and can be unprofessional. They do way too many room checks vs the actual times their supposed to do the room checks. Some staff are nice, some teachers actually want to help their student be better in the best way they can. Most staff leave their job here because their managers just want them to case note and give write-ups to the students here instead of helping them and finding a solution. That's about that I will speak upon.

Horrible facility brain washers and scammers

My boyfriend was going to job Corp for welding the first day he got there he got jumped by five guys and beat him! The staff was so rude, didn’t care what was happening while he was scared of what might happen. One lady really helped him to make sure he was alright he has a broken finger bruised ribs his face is completely swelled and this completely kills me for someone who wants to change their future around and goes into a community and a facility that states they will do everything they can for you kid, your brother, boyfriend, daughter whoever it is to be complete hypocrites not care for their well being their future it completely run down! The security is horrible they even tried to shut him down and lie about the actual fight and make it seem he was lying about the whole thing to keep him silent and not make them seem bad! That’s definitely not a facility for people to grow learn in and study to make them better for the future it’s a facility to keep kids trapped brainwashed and feared into to doing whatever they want. Don’t bring your kids here to help them they have a horrible problem over there try researching more for other facilities this doesn't have to be your way out. Especially miles away to get a call to hear someone close to you got jumped over a race problem it’s not worth the trouble of sending your child here at all it’s not worth anything keep the safe send them to somewhere more convent do your research and reviews ! He felt like it wasn’t right everyone told him to go try it out it might not be the same and it completely was! Facility is a *** hole is completely opposite of what it preaches to be.

Like something out of a horror story.

I attended Shreveport Job Corp from March of 92 February of 93 and the events I witnessed there alone should have that program shut down. Because if it was happening there.....I know it was happening at the others. What I am about to relay is not an exaggeration. When I signed up for the program after high school I was told by the classifier that if I had a drug problem or criminal record I would not be allowed to attend. I had neither and just wanted to better myself. I was a normal kid who just looking to do better. Within a month of arriving I came to the conclusion that I was about the only person there who did not have a record. There were people in there convicted of manslaughter and sent there by a judge. 1. Within the first week I was attacked in orientation because some thug wanted my chair. Nothing was done. I dealt with the problem myself by defending myself. 2. The same day in orientation the kid next to me was stabbed with a pencil......by the same guy who attacked me over the chair. 3. The physical was the most degrading thing I have ever witnessed.....and I spent 20 years in the Navy. No one should have a 5 inch q tip shoved up their urethra. 4. A sixteen year old boy in the room next to me was chloroformed and raped by his five roommates. 5. My roommate blew himself up by huffing gas in the roof with a cigarette in his mouth. 6. Same roommate committed suicide by swallowing a couple hundred pills. 7. Resident adviser by the name of Hatcherson assaulted and man handled over a dozen students by slamming them against the wall and flipping them out of their bunks 8. People were attacked and mugged after receiving their measly 23 dollars. Hit with pipes, shanked and beat. 9. Security guards impregnated female students. 10. I was attacked no less than 20 times in a 13 month period. Everything from mass groups to being bludgeoned with an aerosol can. Reports were filed and never followed up on I assume. 11. The center was repeatedly shot at from local gangs. 12. Girls raped. All these things and more happened. I reported many but in the end I was just happy to escape with my life. The only thing I learned was how to defend myself.

Horrible

I have high functioning autism. I told them this and they belittled me, treated me with extreme cruelty and insulted my intelligence. These people are just so very horrible. They're vile and viscous. They did nothing but insult me and did not help me one bit with a job.

Boy oh boy, do I have some words about them.

For some info about myself before I delve into the shenanigans of this particular Job Corps, I live in Maine. Have for all 22 years and 11 months of my life. I do not come from a wealthy family. I graduated from what was a pretty damned *** High School down in Corinth, Maine (out of the 70-someodd kids who graduated there, only a small fraction of us had passing grades. Luckily, I was one of those kids... not that it mattered, we all got our diplomas). Spent from graduation 2016 to April of 2017 searching for work, volunteering for foodstamps, etc. Eventually got sick and tired of my Dad's psychological *** Left him the first chance I got and moved in with my Mother up in Fort Fairfield. Got enrolled in Job Corps at my request (trade certification and Driver's Ed, plus potential side work on-center. What isn't good about that?), got officially into my class after... two whole months. Granted, it was CISCO. It's a popular class. It's also the most drawn-out and difficult class available. Needless to say, once you're in a trade, that's when the staff stop giving a damn about you unless you slow down in your studies. I've had a number of complications that hindered my progress during my time there. Got sick for almost two weeks straight. Ended up with Bell's Palsy for four months in a row (waking up to half of a functional face is not fun). Three times in a row did I get placed with some really *** roommates. One was a smoker, never cleaned up his half of the dorm room. Stole from me (which, thanks to the useless dorm staff and security, nothing of mine was returned), and as a result of his being there, I suffered from failing room scores as well. Enough failing room scores will land you on concern, and lemme tell you this early: they don't care who is the reason behind the failing scores and those scores WILL keep you from doing anything post-studies in terms of advanced training. They DO NOT care and will do next to NOTHING to help. Had to move twice more, before I got in a room where I could flourish (that RA, Dale Rasmussen, is probably one of the best guys on center. Even he acknowledged the change and all the crap from before). In class is a different beast from the residential side of things. They tout lockstep, they lie. Sure, they say you can go at your own pace... if you have a disability. Anyone else, they might let you slide with a slowdown from, say, one chapter a week to one chapter in two. Due to my issues elsewhere, I had to slow down out of the risk of stress (I've had two aneurysms in the past due to stress. I've blanked out and done allegedly terrible things due to stress. It ain't pretty), and I can safely say they do NOT care why you slow down. They'll give you the upmost *** regardless of why. Been threatened with termination once because of it. My instructor, Mr. Chasse, was alright... for the first 6 months. After that, he slowly became more and more selective of which of his students to help, and more antagonistic to those he disliked. Four of my friends ended up becoming that, even though two of them even managed to get out with CCNA's rather than CCENT's (the CCENT is what I have. You get the CCNA if you complete four more books of study and pass an incredibly difficult certification test). He'll go out of his way to even lie to the staff to get his way. Once convinced the people in charge of Academics that I was on my FOURTH attempt at the CCENT and that I didn't spend a second studying. In truth, he sent me in a first time, where my test was bugged with 65 minutes instead of the normal 90 to finish the test. I didn't finish. He sent me back a week later, against my wishes. Did better, had more time. Didn't pass. The third attempt is when I passed... but not before Chasse lied his *** off. He's also the secondary reason why I didn't get into Advanced Training (ON CENTER, TOO). He let in a *** who was slower than I am in terms of studies and with a history of yelling at and actually assaulting students, but me? Nah. Again, selective and antagonistic. Literally pushed one of my friends to leave Job Corps before completion. Tried to convince another that I was only trying to hurt his chances of success (yet it was my help that managed to get him in a state that allowed him to pass the CCENT test, not to mention my encouragement for him to at least try again). Besides these obvious issues, he also made it nigh impossible for me to get work, by refusing to sign the necessary paperwork (I needed his signature and a letter of recommendation. I didn't get either until I struck a deal with him and one of the center staff. Even then, nothing stuck till I got the CCENT... 8 months later. I did, however, hold my end of the bargain by completing the course a mere month after the deal was made. Total *** that things had to take so long). Speaking of, they will postpone things as much as possible for you if they have it in for you. I'm technically still enrolled till the 6th of June. Been in Driver's Ed for five months now. I've only gotten 4 hours of driving out of that. Tried getting into college. They made sure to make that process as convoluted as possible for me, going out of their way to even make sure I didn't complete the FAFSA process correctly (I'm required to have parental information until the age of 25 UNLESS there's proof that I either have dead parents or come from an unsafe household. They told me all I needed was a letter from Job Corps stating independence. Didn't learn that I wouldn't get anywhere with just that till two months later. Luckily I at least got accepted...) But the real kicker, is residential. The people in charge of the students here, are some real biased *** Had a friend who was being harassed by a group of 5 different kids on wing. I was there to see. Constant banging at his door. Constant threats and overall idiotic means of harassment. Eventually we got around to reporting it. THE KICKER: it was my friend who was threatened with termination over this *** Those others got away without even an ounce of punishment. Another more serious case, however... two other friends of mine suffered at the hands of a rapist during their time. Both elected to stay silent. Both raped by the same *** I had the gall to write a 4 page report detailing both events and listed a key-witness who saw one of the rapes taking place. They remained silent and urged me not to tell anyone. Well, guess what I'm doing now and again? I'm legally bound by contract, unable to charge Job Corps in a court of law with any crime... but that can't stop someone else from carrying out the deed. I'm certain the Federal Government would LOVE to hear about all this *** that goes unreported... number 2 in the nation my *** NOBODY I know who passed CISCO with their certification has work in their field, yet Job Corps touts a 100% employment rate. Or the fact that a particular staff member got away with "borrowing" 2000 dollars from the SGA (student government association, typical student government), so she could star in a play. Regardless. If you think you can get along with the staff here, and can stay out of trouble and get everything done on time and without hassle, you can get use out of Job Corps. In the end, the place exists for a good cause... but watch your *** and keep that nose cleaner than their expectations for rooms. It'll save you a year or twos worth of *** in a handbasket.

Don’t do it

Although this could be a great place for children struggling to get through school, at times it has been a nightmare. My son has called me crying thinking he was going to get kicked out due to one of the boys giving him a cookie that had weed in it, yes drugs are inside this building just as much as on the street, and lastnight he called me to tell me that one of the boys in his carpentry class set his hair on fire thinking it was funny. And not one person from this center has called me. My son just called me and told me they just want to sweep it under the rug because the boy would be homeless if he got kicked out, really I don’t give a damn about anyone being homeless, this was my son do they not understand what could have happened. He could have had severe burns on his head and face. I would not recommend this place for any child, seek help elsewhere

Muhlenberg job corps

I believe mom's out there should know the truth before sending their children. If your child wants to better themselves by getting their GED & job training this is definitely NOT the place for them. I ignored the reviews & warnings I read & gave it a chance for my son (big mistake!) This is a place over run with criminal riff raff and rejects who bully, fight and act completely asinine. They stay up all night doing this crap. Most of the kids there are troubled and or sent there by court order. In the less than 24 hrs my son attended he was given a run down of the situation by a counselor explaining how fights there are common & warning all the newbies to get ready to be threatened or assaulted. He then witnessed 3 fights and had a group of thugs call him a *** *** white boy & threaten to jump him. The staff left the room during the fights refusing to break them up there are not real police officers there like a regular public school even though they are filled with criminals, there are security guards who can't seem to keep the situation under control or keep students safe. My son bought a bus ticket for the nxt day to get out of there & they kept refusing to let him leave even though he's an adult, (lost his belongings) and tried to backtrack on all the warnings he was given by the counselor about violence on campus. They almost caused him to miss his bus. There were also a lot of things he was told during the orientation before attending that turned out not to be true or twisted facts once he got on campus. I'm told things don't get reported because they are afraid to lose their funding and kids there told my son the kids that fight don't get kicked out because it looks bad on the school. No one called police on the kids fighting and no staff attended to them to make sure they didn't suffer any injuries. The cafeteria was filthy too. Why don't they make the kids clean the cafeteria and do janitorial work on the entire campus to pay their way, learn discipline & keep them to busy to act like animals?? Place 2-3 security guards in each building since they house criminals?? Poorly run to say the least.
