With a diverticulitis background, Dr. Willis would not prescribe any antibiotics to help remove the infection.

I was told by my doctor office that they could not prescribe antibiotics until I was seen in the office by a doctor, I went to my appointment and doctor Willis said she was not going to prescribe antibiotics until I have MRI done, I explained to her that I have a history of this flaring up and all I needed was antibiotics for the infection to subside and the pain to go away, not asking for any pain meds, but her response was do I want to go to the hospital. I was trying to avoid a huge hospital bill but she still was not going to help me out with the antibiotics. From today experience, I will never step foot in another banner hospital or clinic

Poor Patient care and compassion

As we waited in Your Tucson ER I personally witness several interaction of staff with patients that was disrespectful and heartless. One patient ask 3 differct staff member for a blanket over a 45 min period, finally another patient had to request the blanket for her in order for her to get one. Than a patient who has dementia was just discharged and left by herself outside and was lost by her family who asked.multiple staff for help locating her, but staff did not seem to be concerned about the families worries or the missing women. If that was not enough to make you want to leave a man present with a head injury and a dependent son who had obvious mental disability and he was told he was basically on his owe with caring for watching his son while he himself waited to be seen for his head injury. I realize the ER is not a child care facility but the lack of compassion I witness and the treatment they all received was some of the worst I have seen in the 30 years I have worked in hospital. Same on your ER staff.

Still traumatized from a year ago

Over a year ago I went to banner on West Thomas Rd for a broken hip and the night nurses treated me like I was a drug addict because they were so inadequate and could not find a vein kept poking me and when I complained that they weren't in a vein and that I was still in pain the nurse screams at me and says I will get you your morphine. I had to ask how I was going to be able to go to bathroom and an hour later after having to ask again they brought me I laid in my clothes that I came in until 45 minutes before I had to have surgery. After surgery I woke up in the surgery room to the anesthesiologist trying to once again find a vein to give me pain medicine which he said he found one but didn't Took me back to my room to the same night nurses that I had before They were in the wrong professional field was not an ounce of compassion. I got lucky because they left a walker in my room so a couple of hours after surgery I manage to make it to the walker and slowly, showing my bare butt and walked out of the hospital and was picked up by a friend It was a nightmare

Customer service billing

Original review Jun 09, 2023
I had an office visit to have my hand looked at with Dr Kelly Le Scott an in- network provider. I have Aetna banner silver plan insurance I pay premiums on. I pay 50.00 for a speciality MD office visit. I was charged 252.00 for an office visit. The office entered a surgery code instead of an office visit code. So again, it will to be reviewed before banner will fix their systems issue. WTF the coded it wrong just fix it!

Billing department is incompetent and non-responsive; care providers are careless

Ive been a Banner UMC Tucson patient since March 2022. Every single visit results in billing snafus - billing me months later for charges they forgot to send to the insurance, billing me months later for copays I already paid, and overcharging for outpatient procedures copays. In the first 6 months I was refunded $400 in overpayments after spending literally hours on the phone with billing and insurance to dispute charges and demand reimbursement of my overpayments. Today I received a mystery text message from Banner inviting me to sign up for Curae, a credit company so I can pay an $800 bill Ive never received and thats because I dont owe them $800. The text message tells how Curae can keep debt collectors from pursuing you. Didnt Banner pay an $18 million settlement in 2018 for doing all this kind of billing abuse? All this is bad enough, but Banner is the medical care provider AND the insurance provider. The insurance is Banner Medicare Advantage. When you call billing to ask about a bill they tell you to call your insurance, and when you call insurance they tell you to call billing. All this is so freaking stressful that it almost makes me forget that Cardiology committed malpractice on me. I had to have cardioversion in June 2022 and the procedure itself was successful but I was given the wrong discharge instructions. The nurse made me sign off on discharge instructions before the procedure was done. She asked me what meds I was taking and wrote the discharge instructions telling me to take the same dosage. But the 2 doctors (attending and fellow) who did the procedure actually wrote in their procedure notes that the dose should be doubled in order to maintain sinus rhythm. However, neither of them came back to tell me themselves or give me correct discharge instructions. Three days later, after following the discharge instructions I was given by the nurse, I went back into a-fib. I called the cardiologist on call and he asked me how much of the drug I was taking and when I told him 50 mg he said well the gold standard is 100 mg. I read him the discharge instructions I received, and he read the procedure notes which were not released to me through my Banner patient portal until AFTER I was already back in a-fib. My cardiologist first tried to blame me for not following discharge instructions because when he called me the next day, he was reading the procedure notes. Later he did apologize for the error. I had to have the procedure repeated a week after the first one - another exposure to anaesthesia and a second cardioversion. Of course Banner tried to bill me for the second procedure. I sent an email to the Cardiology Fellowship Director and the Chair of Cardiology, and also messaged both of them through the patient portal. Neither has bothered to respond. I also immediately went in person to speak with a patient satisfaction rep and she took my complaint seriously and told me the CMO would review my file and contact me within 30 days. I did get a letter from her reiterating that the CMO would contact me, but guess what. Its all about ass-covering - Im sure the first person contacted by all involved was the risk-management legal department who told them all to keep quiet. My advice to anyone thinking about using Banner providers or buying Banner insurance is DONT! But if youve already taken that plunge, be sure not to EVER sign discharge instructions until AFTER the procedure is finished and the DOCTOR has actually written the instructions. Also, it can take months to get an appointment (e.g. Audiology) and for some medical sub-specialties they either do not have female doctors, or the one they do have doesnt do the procedure you may need. Banner UMC refers a lot to outside doctors because for some reason they cant seem to hold onto their providers.

Billing Dispute

Banner sent me a bill for $1,700.00 and I was never at Banner on the day they charged, when I called I was told they would investigate. I never heard another word from Banner but how I'm getting collection calls. Banner thinks like sheep you will just allow them to bill you for anything and you will just pay it. All over their website and over the phone message they only give you payment option because they are crooks and gansters. Called them today explained my issue was place on hold for over 30 minutes then disconnected without speaking to anyone. You are nothing but crooks your customer service is non-existent and I hope you go out of business.

Your stupid commercial

Please take your stupid mammogram commercial off the air. The experience is not like you show it to be. There is nothing traumatic about it and none of the caregivers act like that. They dont make a difference. Its very routine and not a big deal snd I even had to go back for a second check and I still didnt cry like that ridiculous woman in the commercial: it was fine and it was easy. Stop making it look like such a big deal or people wont go. You are idiots.

Angry Caregiver

I will try to make a long story short. My mother has been in declining health for eight years now and over those eight years, I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly from this hospital. All of this was BEFORE COVID so there is no excuse. Do not believe for a second that the severe medical negligence going on at Banner Thunderbird is because of staff shortages and budget cuts - I know no one at Banner (especially the administration and the CEO) is starving, the proof is right there in all the bills they "forget" to send through insurance and instead charge off to collection agencies before the legal time allotted to dispute and file a claim with insurance, not to mention all those predatory payment plans they force on their patients in their most vulnerable time (my mom was highly medicated, couldn't speak, and they still tried to sign her up for a credit line a day after having a massive stroke.) The nurses are rude with way too much attitude for a job that requires empathy and selflessness and there are far too little exceptions to this rule. You'll sit there ringing a call button and you just listen to the melody of the innumerable call lights ringing while ICU NURSES laugh and joke obnoxiously at their station (I might add that if you're too busy to help someone to the bathroom who cannot walk - you don't have the time to play candy crush on your phone and giggle outside a sick person's room!) The doctor's are JOKES, my mother had a wound on her stomach and when he asked to see it, she accidentally pulled her gown a little too high, he yelled at her "COVER YOURSELF, WOMAN!" I wish I was making this up. The other doctors? Oh, they come in before visiting hours, I suspect on purpose. They won't return phone calls, and you'll be lucky as a patient if you see them for more than 30 seconds. Not one of them communicate with one another - so they all end up contradicting each other and getting angry with patients and nurses because they gave an order that wasn't followed because it didn't apply because a different doctor gave a different order, and they just didn't bother checking with anyone. I don't think I need to tell you the specific ramifications on what happens when medical teams don't coordinate but it can be DEADLY. In fact, 1 out 850 patients in the U.S. who die are due to simple medication errors, so sit on that one for awhile, Banner. The food is terrible and has made my mom sick on occasion with food poisoning. She's contracted C.Diff twelve different times from the DISGUSTING state of that hospital. I mean *** and blood on walls and floors, dirty bedding and equipment, bugs of all shapes and sizes, I could go on about how filthy and horrible the environment is there. It is safe to say it is not conducive to healing, and I'd argue you'd be better off at home with a family member than go here. Please don't take your loved ones here, it has been heartbreaking to watch how they've treated my mom, and I would just like to ask everyone who works there - would you want your parents treated like dirt? Would you want your child to sit in a hallway of an ER for eight hours while incompetent admins try to find a room? Would you like it if a nurse, doctor, CNA, social worker, or anyone working in a hospital screamed at your grandparents? I didn't think so. And it's not just me - look at ALL the reviews and tell me there isn't systemic issues with this hospital that continues to this day despite complaints, and I'll tell you why! Because all those automated responses they think will placate you. Well, I have emailed and I have called and I have received nothing but further rudeness and apathy for what my family has gone through. They do not care. None of the people who the own the hospital care. The CEO doesn't care. No one cares. Go to honor health, go to arrowhead, avoid this place like the plague (because if you go there, you might just contract it.

Billing complaints

I love my physical therapy team! They are some of the best I have ever seen! Billing is a nightmare though. After paying every visit, this December I got an $11 bill for an April visit, with no explanation, now an $84 bill for April with no explanation. Ive tried to call billing & have waited almost an hour before giving up! Now theyre threading collections. Still no explanation of these (new) charges. My insurance is wayyyy good. Nothing would cost $84. I even warn friends when I recommend them to the best therapists anywhere that billing may be a nightmare. And it often is. Get it together Banner billing!

I should be able to rate zero cuz you don't deserve any points. My room is filthy my toilet hasn't been washed since I've been here I had to beg to get toilet paper.

As a patient I should not be lied to. I've been outright lied to. In the middle of the night they'll wake you up every hour and a half every 2 hours if you can even go to sleep and then when they put IVs in you they say we'll be back in 30 minutes two three hours later maybe if you're lucky. In this particular situation tonight was only an hour + 45. You're not taking care of me properly and this is elder abuse! I came here with a heart condition. I am here almost 10 days and we haven't done anything. What a scam!

I was badly neglected at my last ER Visit in February 2023

I went into ER Banner Baywood after suffering a horrendous migraine at that time for over 10 hrs no sleep whatsoever. I have the highest pain condition there is called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. A very misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition. Even though it has been around since the Civil War. So I went in at 7:30 Am with my sunglasses on and coat almost over my head. 6 hrs later some rude nurse named Dotty calls my name only to put me in some kind of exam room nowhere to lay down. She never introduced herself or treat me with any kind of compassion at all. Writes a few lines in the computer and leaves again until my husband went out and said we have been waiting for over 7 hrs. You leave the room not saying a word so in comes Dr. Whoever saying oh Dotty said you have a pain condition that is causing you pain. I could not talk anymore. So he listens to my chest for 10 seconds and says oh you need a chest X-ray. WHAT. I have been suffering for HOURS with a migraine and you take a chest X-ray. Finally. In a sort of exam room bed that had to be moved by hand and hard as a rock.Dottys trys to start a IV was a mess up. Now this pain condition I deal with this horrible awful pain and I can barely have a BP with a baby cuff. She sticks me again and that was it for me. A decent young Man named Tim came in and got it started for help with the horrible migraine. He said Dotty and I will be caring for you. I said keep her away from me. This was very traumatic for me again as the 2nd time I had been there in 3 yrs. Another story. I did the 2 hr cocktail which I still was suffering with the migraine after it was done. ,I just so badly wanted to go home. They called in a script for some drug for tension headaches. Which I already take a ADHD drug already and should not have even taken the few pills I took so no checking my medication list.

Requesting Medical records? Forget it

A third party requested my medical records. They requested them six times. They even called twice (they got names of people they talked to. They were never sent. I called and finally got a human being- she said no request was received. She asked if I wanted her to send me the authorization form again. This was completely not helpful since obviously this third-party had my authorization already. I asked if there was anything else I can do and she was very rude. And then I asked for another question, and she yelled, and then just mured herself. Now this is where it gets interesting. She obviously knew that the company was doing those ratings where you stay on the phone after you have finished talking to the representative and you can give feedback to questions they ask you. Well, she would not hang up! It was hilarious like I stayed on the phone so that I could leave her the negative feedback that she deserved and she would not hang up! I started just doing things i needed to do, and I left my phone on and did not hang up and for 18 minutes she sat on the phone and would not hang up so that I could not give her feedback. Also, that allowed her to take a big break because she couldnt take other calls! I finally hung up- no feedback given. This is so absurd and so wrong, I just cant believe an employee can get away with us. Banner has so many problems. Its insane. I have so many things I could say here from experiences Ive had there it is bad bad bad!!!

Long ER wait times

Even with a pain level of 9, wait is at least four hours. Not sure when Ill be seen. They said they have a ct waiting for mehours ago but nothing yet.

Excessive wait times in the ER

The wait time and lack of communication that its going to a 15 hour wait is ridiculous! I could have passed out from not being able to breathe! Let people know that its going be a long wait so they can go somewhere else! They should not call this an emergency room! Honor Health is so much better! You really need to figure out a better way to run the emergency room!
